When Deborah Warner’s production of Eugene Onegin opened the Met season in 2013, soprano Anna Netrebko had only recently begun singing the role of Tatiana; however, when she returned to the part at the Met a few years later, her dramatic approach, like that of the character herself, had grown over time. With breathtaking music by Tchaikovsky (The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, 1812 Overture) and a story based on Alexander Pushkin’s masterful verse novel, Eugene Onegin is poignant Russian romance at its finest. Lush orchestrations, elegant ballroom dances, grand sets, and elaborate period costumes bring 1800s Russia to life on the McCaw Hall stage for the first time in this achingly beautiful tale of longing, remorse, and love unfulfilled. The 1879 opera Eugene Onegin, by Tchaikovsky, based on the story, is perhaps the version that most people are familiar with.

The beautiful tragedy of Eugene Onegin allowed the composer to show off his full range of grand emotions. The work was performed at the Royal Swedish Opera for the first time in 1903. Now, almost a hundred years later, in the young, celebrated director Vasily Barkhatov’s version, the story is told entirely from the point of view of Onegin.

But only a little more wild than for Svetlana Aksenova as Tatyana. Her gorgeously pure soprano generated the intense white heat so essential in conveying the steely resolve her character needs to resist Onegin’s persistent advances in the opera’s final scene. The pain of unrequited love is portrayed unforgettably by two of opera’s greatest stars. Soprano Renée Fleming is musically and dramatically radiant as the shy Tatiana, who falls in love with the worldly Eugene Onegin, played with devastating charisma by baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky. Their mesmerizing vocalism and chemistry explode in one of opera’s most heartbreaking final scenes. Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin.
