Brahma must have been listening to the Victorian Opera Chorus’s fervent prayers for mild weather. Since Melbourne’s notoriously fickle weather gods make any performance at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl a hazardous undertaking, it was a relief to find that The Pearl Fishers would be enjoyed without the lashing rain of two nights previously.

Bizet died thinking that Carmen was a failure, though subsequently it became one of the most performed operas of the entire repertoire with it's shocking story set to irresistible music. The Pearl Fishers was an earlier composition which though burdened with a somewhat weak libretto contained some simply beautiful music.

"Au fond du temple saint" ("At the back of the holy temple", also known as "The Pearl Fishers Duet") is a duet from Georges Bizet's Les pêcheurs de perles (The Pearl Fishers). This opera depicts a story of love, betrayal, and sacrifice that centers around two friends, Nadir and Zurga, who have vowed to never let the love of a woman come between them. Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots, Le Prophète and Robert le Diable are among those, and so is this sweet little opera by Georges Bizet in his pre- Carmen days. But The Pearl Fishers has not fared very well, on record or in the opera houses.
